EXCLUSIVE: Nova is no longer one of the top 100 baby names after making the list back in 2023, a year that saw much success for a controversial model with the same name
A cam girl has revealed why she thinks that men shouldn’t be involved in baby naming after discovering she had an awkward role to play with two families.
Nova Jewels, 29, from Dundee, is one of the more controversial models to have made headlines and to feature in Channel 4 documentary, Confessions of a Cam Girl.
In the year that saw the broadcast the show, which Nova reaped a lot of financial success off the back of, 2023 also marked a time where the name ‘Nova’ found itself on the top 100 baby names list.
However, the celestial-themed moniker has now completely vanished off of the list. But did Nova’s Channel 4 debut and headline grabbing exploits influence its popularity in 2023?
Well, it’s hard to tell completely – but Nova, her model name rather than her birth name, is adamant that she’s the inspiration behind some of her fans’ baby names.
And now she’s calling for men not to be involved in baby naming for this very reason, along with sharing a huge warning for soon-to-be mums.
In an exclusive chat with the Daily Star, Nova said: “I may not have been the entire reason for the name being so popular but I know that I was the reasoning behind the name of two 2023 babies.
“One of them, the couple actually told me that they were naming the baby because they had never heard the name until they stumbled across me on social media.
“The second one is slightly different and this is the reason I would never let a man partake in naming a child. One of my fans had told me he was no longer going to be spending money [on my services] because he was having a baby with his partner now and needed to save – very sensible behaviour, I know.
“Anyway, he told me before deactivating his account that he had already planted the seed and had mentioned the name Nova to his partner. About 10 or 11 months later, he got back in touch with me to say that they had in fact decided to name her Nova.”
With the mum none the wiser that her child is named after her partner’s favourite cam girl, the model is almost glad that it’s dropped in popularity.
Nova proved to be ‘in’ for 2023 as the name entered at 94th on the top 100 UK baby name list before exiting a year later. New entries on this year’s list include ‘Margot’, most likely inspired by the Barbie star who is proving to be cinema’s sweetheart over the last couple of years.
The name Margot has entered at number 88 on the list and another new addition ‘Gabriella’ is welcomed at number 99. As mentioned above, Nova isn’t fussed that her name has been bumped off the list as she doesn’t like ‘blending’ into the crowd.
Nova Jewels said: “I don’t want Nova back on the list so the rest of the names can stay where they are. I am delighted that Nova has been bumped off the list actually because I’m not a girl who likes to blend in with the crowd.
“It’s so funny people are calling their kids Nova because there has been two occasions where I have been out in Dundee and heard a voice shout ‘Nova’ and of course my head instantly turns around.
“However, on both of these occasions it actually wasn’t me that was getting shouted on for once, it was their little ones that they were shouting on. Personally, I don’t think anyone suits the name quite like I do.”
