The Vivienne was found dead by their heartbroken father and stepmother at the weekend, according to a friend.
James Lee Williams, known as The Vivienne when in drag, tragically died last week aged 32 following a glittering career that launched to new heights when they won the inaugural season of RuPaul‘s Drag Race UK in 2019.
Cheshire Police said officers were called to an address in Chorlton-by-Backford at 12.22pm on Sunday following reports of a sudden death.
In an update yesterday, police said that they found ‘no suspicious circumstances’.
A friend told The Sun that the body of the talented drag artist was discovered by their father and stepmother.
The newspaper reported that The Vivienne was next week due to move into a new £400,000 house and had also booked a holiday.
‘They were planning a tour and really had everything to live for,’ the friend added.
There has been an outpouring of grief since The Vivienne’s shock death was confirmed by their publicist on Sunday who paid tribute to the ‘incredibly loved star’.
Taking to social media yesterday, RuPaul shared a throwback photo of himself in drag with The Vivienne out of drag alongside a heartfelt tribute.
‘With a broken heart, I join the entire Drag Race universe in mourning the loss of The Vivienne—an incredibly talented queen and a lovely human being,’ he wrote.

Confirming the tragic death on Instagram on Sunday, Vivienne’s publicist Simon Jones wrote: ‘It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend.
‘James was an incredibly loved, warmhearted and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle.
‘They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career. We will not be releasing any further details.
‘We please ask that James’s family are given the time and privacy they now need to process and grieve.’
He continued: ‘These are words I never ever wanted to write. Viv was a close friend, a client and someone I loved very much.
‘From the moment I met them in 2019 I knew we could create magic together and I became their manager. Their talent was immense and the light they brought to every room was astonishing. No one has ever made me laugh as much in my life as Viv did. Their comic genius and quick wit was like no other.
‘I’m so proud and lucky that Viv was such a big part of my life everyday for the last five years. It’s tragic that their career was only just beginning. In musical theatre Viv had found a space and career they loved, excelled and thrived in.
‘I am heartbroken and devastated at this news. RIP my wonderful friend. You left us way too soon.’

Williams, who came second on the 2023 series of Dancing on Ice, recently performed as the Wicked Witch of the West in a UK and Irelands tour of The Wizard of Oz musical and reprised their role in the West End at the Gillian Lynne Theatre last year.
Wicked star Ariana Grande paid a heartfelt tribute ahead of attending the 2025 Golden Globes.
The actress and singer took to social media to share a picture of The Vivienne along with three hearts and an infinity emoji.
Born in Colwyn Bay, Wales, in April 1992, Williams grew up watching Lily Savage on TV, citing that as their first exposure to drag.
Describing Wales as a ‘big-fish-in-a-small-pond situation’, the star moved to Liverpool aged 16 to pursue a career as a makeup artist, first working on the beauty counter in Debenhams.
It was there that they earned their nickname The Vivienne for dressing entirely in Vivienne Westwood, developing their budding passion for drag while going out with friends in the evenings.
In 2019, the budding star auditioned for and went on to win the first series of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK‘.
Leaping from one career triumph to the next, Williams then appeared on the seventh season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars’ as The Vivienne, before becoming a finalist in ‘Dancing on Ice’ in 2023, where viewers branded them a ‘star’.
But amid their rise to fame, Williams also battled with drug addiction – something they openly spoke about in the past.
