Archie Vaughan – son of 2005 Ashes-winning skipper Michael – will captain England Under-19s South Africa tour

  • England U19s will play South Africa in two Tests and three one-day internationals

Michael Vaughan’s son Archie will follow in his father’s footsteps by captaining his country later this month.

The Somerset all-rounder will lead England Under-19 in two Tests and three one-day internationals on a tour of South Africa that begins with a flight to Cape Town on Thursday.

Vaughan, 19, said: ‘To get the opportunity to represent England at this level is really special in itself, but to lead the team out is something else.

‘If someone had told me 12 months ago that I would have forced my way into the Somerset first team and be captaining the Under-19s I wouldn’t have believed them.

‘It’s happened quickly but I’m going to keep my feet on the ground and work harder and harder.

‘The next step is to try and win in South Africa and hopefully I can perform as well.’

His dad masterminded the 2005 Ashes win over Australia and went on to secure 26 Test victories as captain, an England record that stood for 14 years until broken by Joe Root in 2022.

Vaughan Jr is one of a number of kids of the Noughties generation to have made an impact on the county scene in recent months, taking outstanding figures of 11 for 140 with his off-spin to plunge champions Surrey to County Championship defeat in Taunton last September.

His selection as England Under-19 captain follows the controversial decision to pick 16-year-old Rocky Flintoff on an England Lions tour of Australia – one that has caused rumblings around the shires due to his dad Andrew Flintoff being head coach and his batting average in first-class cricket being lower than his age.

Other notable inclusions in the 18-strong Under-19 squad are Year 11 schoolboy Joe Moores, the nephew of ex-England coach Peter Moores, all-rounder James Minto, who has been dubbed the new Ben Stokes by his coaches at Durham, Farhan Ahmed, the 16-year-old younger brother of multi-format international Rehan Ahmed, and another county cricket sibling in Tom Rew, who is hoping to follow James into the full Somerset side.
