A recent study reveals that 40% of Brits have altered their daily routines in the past year to inject a bit of excitement into their lives.

The study reports that most people in the UK feel varying their day-to-day activities is crucial to maintain motivation and prevent boredom. Now, they’re shaking things up with an eye on saving money.

The survey, which polled 2,000 adults, found that one in three Brits have abandoned their loyalty to a specific supermarket in search of better deals and cost savings on their shopping. Additionally, 30% have begun batch cooking for the week ahead.

What’s more, a fifth have chosen to cut down on evening TV time to help conserve energy, with 22% opting for an earlier bedtime. Which in this case allows 11% to set their morning alarms an hour earlier to maximise their day.

But most significantly, 25% have made changes to their home energy usage. Whether it’s by limiting the number of appliances they use simultaneously or using high-energy appliances – like the dishwasher – off-peak, Brits are modifying their daily routines to help lower costs.

The study, commissioned by Smart Energy GB, aims to demonstrate how adopting more flexible home habits could result in bill savings.

According to Smart Energy GB, this can be achieved through energy reward schemes which incentivise customers to use energy at different times of the day and can be accessed with a smart meter.

Consumer finance guru, Steph McGovern, said: “I always want to make sure that I’m helping people make their money work harder for them, and I’m conscious of doing the same in my own life.”

She added: “It can be easy to put off admin jobs like getting a smart meter, but it’s clear that they open up lots of opportunities for people to save, like by giving them access to reward schemes.”

A mere 27% are aware of the schemes offered by their energy provider. However, for the 79% who are aware and have used one, 87% claim they have saved extra money by using the scheme.

“It’s great to see millions of smart meter owners are benefiting and saving money on their bills,” said Victoria Bacon, Director at Smart Energy GB.

She added: “Being able to access schemes that reward you for being more flexible with your energy usage can be especially helpful at this time of year when we’re spending a lot more on heating, hot water and lighting.”
