Liverpool and Spurs’ Carabao Cup clash was stopped after a horror injury to Rodrigo Bentancur.
Play was stopped in the eight minute when Bentancur stooped to try and head the ball, and didn’t get up after failing to make contact. Spurs players were initially horrified, with Pedro Porro quick to spot what was happening, and rushed to help their fallen team-mate.
A stretcher was brought onto the pitch and the Uruguayan was quick to receive medical attention. Spurs players started to talk amongst themselves as Ange Postecoglou readied Brennan Johnson to replace the stricken midfielder on the sideline.
Bentancur was carefully moved onto a stretcher, with Sky Sports opting not to show replays of the incident. There was a delay of around ten minutes before Johnson was able to enter the field and play resumed with a Spurs corner.
Addressing the incident on X, Spurs’ official account posted: “Bentancur is stretchered off and we’re forced into an early change. We’re all with you, Lolo!”
Football fans were quick to take to social media to wish the Uruguayan well.
“Heartbreaking for Bentancur, praying for the quickest and healthiest recovery,” one fan said with a heart emoji. While a second shared: “Wishing a speedy recovery to Rodrigo Bentancur. Fell unchallenged at a Spurs corner.
“Huge credit to Pedro Porro for immediately spotting the problem, rushing to Bentancur and calling for the medics.”
“Hope it’s not as serious as the stretcher and stuff suggest for Bentancur,” a third posted. And another added: “Huge credit here goes to Pedro Porro. He absolutely charged over after noticing Bentancur go down weirdly. Really hope he’ll be ok!”
