Two lynx are on the run in the Scottish Highlands, allegedly due to an “illegal release.” The Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) broke the news that the felines were roaming free within the park’s territory.

Alongside Police Scotland, CNPA is delving into the details of the incident while reassuring locals that the naturally timid lynx pose “low risk” to people.

A spokesperson explained: “The park authority have been notified about a suspected illegal release of two lynx in the Cairngorms National Park.”

They elaborated: “Police Scotland have been informed and are working closely with partners (including the Park Authority) to establish the full picture and take appropriate action.”

The statement stressed the organisation’s grave view on the matter: “We condemn the illegal release of wild animals in the strongest possible terms and we are also concerned for the welfare of the lynx that have been released.”

The importance of maintaining a safe distance from the animals was highlighted: “Whilst they are shy animals and low risk to humans, we would ask anyone who does spot a lynx not to approach nor to attend the area.”

As the police probe continues, the CNPA has decided it’s not suitable to issue further commentary. However, Highland Wildlife Park is lending its expertise to help locate the elusive lynx, reiterating the CNPA’s message to keep clear if one is spotted.

Voicing support, a representative for Highland Wildlife Park confirmed: “We have been notified about the suspected illegal release of two lynx in the Cairngorms National Park.

“Although these are not our lynx, we are working closely with Police Scotland and partners to safely retrieve the animals.

“Whilst lynx present a low risk to humans we would ask anyone who does spot them not to approach nor to attend the area.”

“Do not approach the lynx or attend the area, but instead call police via 101.”
