Jose Mourinho is the overwhelming odds-on favourite to replace Sean Dyche at Goodison Park after Everton sacked their manager just hours before FA Cup tie
Jose Mourinho is the major odds-on favourite to replace Sean Dyche at Everton. Just hours before their FA Cup third round game against Peterborough United at Goodison Park, Everton’s new owners, the Friedkin Group, moved to sack Dyche. The 53-year-old was dismissed with Everton just one point above the Premier League relegation zone in 16th place and winless in their last five games.
It’s been announced that club captain Seamus Coleman and former left-back Leighton Baines are set to take charge of the cup game on Thursday night. But the favourite to land the job on a permanent basis is the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur manager.
According to Gambling.com, the Portuguese is the odds-on favourite to land the job ahead of former Toffees boss David Moyes and ex-player and interim England boss Lee Carsley.
Mourinho has managed 363 Premier League games, but would not have faced a challenge like this if he is to return to England and attempt to keep Everton in the top flight. However, the 61-year-old is still under contract with Turkish giants Fenerbahce, who he joined last summer.
However, it’s been reported by The Athletic that Mourinho is not in contention to take over as Everton manager. They claim it’s not a consideration after he previously worked under the new Everton owners at Roma. Following his exit from the Italian capital, Mourinho slammed the owners, claiming they have ‘little knowledge’ of football.
Everton announced Dyche’s departure on Thursday in an official club statement, which read: “Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as Senior Men’s First Team Manager with immediate effect.
“Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have also left the Club. The process to appoint a new manager is under way and an update will be provided in due course. Under-18s Head Coach Leighton Baines and Club Captain Seamus Coleman will take charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis.”
