Manchester United are plotting a shock raid on Brentford for Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo.

United boss Ruben Amorim is a huge admirer of the forward – and believes he would fit into his long term plans at Old Trafford. Amorim is keeping close tabs on Mbeumo ahead of the summer transfer window.

And United will consider making a £40m bid in an attempt to lure the 25-year-old to the English giants. Mbeumo joined Brentford from Troyes for a then club record fee of £5.8m in 2019.

And he has gone on to become one of the most exciting attacking players in the Premier League. He has scored 13 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this season, to attract interest from United’s rivals Arsenal and Newcastle.

It’s understood Amorim likes Mbeumo’s versatility in a front three, as well as his work ethic. Brentford boss Thomas Frank has dismissed the chances of Mbeumo being sold in the January transfer window.

But United are willing to wait until the end of the season, when it is hoped Amorim will have a bigger budget to spend on new signings. Mbeumo would find a move to United difficult to turn down, and could also triple his wages to £150,000-a-week.

But landing Mbeumo would depend on United being able to sell some of their current stars first, including winger Alejandro Garnacho. United are expected to conduct a fire sale in the close season as Amorim rebuilds his team.

And Garnacho is open to leaving Old Trafford, having become increasingly frustrated at his lack of starts since Amorim took charge in November.
