Wrexham’s new multi-million-pound academy training ground, currently under construction, has been hit by thieves.

The state-of-the-art facility, backed by the club’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is part of ambitious plans to enhance infrastructure for the team’s young talents.

Over the Christmas period, the site next to Darland High School in Rossett village, near Wrexham, was targeted by burglars. A John Deere tractor and Bateson trailer were among the items stolen during the incident, which also saw a padlocked gate damaged.

The break-in is believed to have taken place between December 20 and January 3. A spokesperson for the League One club confirmed that a police report had been filed and the club was now seeking to recover costs through its insurers.

North Wales Police are urging anyone with information to contact them: “Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact officers on 101, or via our website, using reference number 25000008049.”

Plans showing the location of Wrexham’s new youth training facility

The development has faced several controversies since work began before planning permission was granted.

The scheme includes the creation of two buildings on a green land area, featuring changing rooms, offices, a medical room and a gym, reports Wales Online.

Wrexham execs insist the move will pave the way for fresh talent to rise as their A-lister bosses aim for the stars with Premier League ambitions. Not everyone’s sold, though, with locals upset about the “brutal” look and worries over increased noise and traffic.

An open letter read: “The brutal commercial and industrial appearance is not in keeping with the proposed location within the green wedge. The development goes against planning policy advice in regards to the green wedge.

“The school will lose the use of some athletic practice areas as a result of the proposal. The development is retrospective and the council should have made them stop work until the application was determined. The development brings no benefit to the Rossett community.”
