Fan pulls off probably the most outrageous one-handed catch throughout Women’s Ashes match – and impressively does not spill a drop of his beer!

  • Australia clinched victory in the first ODI match of the summer Ashes series
  • All-rounder Ash Gardener produced a player-of-the-match performance

A spectator produced one of the most outrageous catches we’ve seen so far this year, and perhaps even more spectacularly, didn’t seem to spill a drop of his drink at the same time.

Australia and England went head-to-head on Sunday in the first ODI of the Women’s Ashes series this summer, with the hosts claiming the first victory.

It was an impressive all-around performance by Ash Gardener coupled with a half-century from Alyssa Healy that led the hosts to a four-wicket victory in the first match of the series.

The win will give Australia a two-point lead in the series, yet Healy’s side are staying cautious of getting too complacent, with the memory of England’s comeback in 2023 still fresh in the memory.

The tourists would set Australia a target of 204 after Heather Knight’s side were bowled out in the 43rd over.

Knight produced a captain’s knock, taking the highest score (39) for her side and was closely followed by Danni Wyatt-Hodge (38) before she was dismissed by Annabel Sutherland.

A cricket fan took a simply sensational catch during the first ODI of the Women’s Ashes on Sunday

The man produced the one-handed feat without spilling a single drop of his beer too

It came as Australia secured a four-wicket victory against England in their first ODI of the summer

A bizarre moment unfolded mid-way through the first innings§ where Amy Jones, who struck 31 off 30 balls, launched Annabel Sutherland for six towards deep square leg.

It was a huge strike, with the ball crossing the boundary line before flying into the crowd.

But one spectator was on hand to produce perhaps one of the catches of the year.

The gentleman, who was enjoying the match with a beer in one hand, plucked the ball out of the air with his right hand before falling backwards.

Even more impressively, it appeared the man didn’t spill a single drop of his drink taking the wonder catch.

The sensational moment sent the commentary box into meltdown, as fans stood around the gentleman ran over to celebrate the epic moment.

‘That was the most important part mate, to be honest,’ the fan said to Seven Cricket’s Trent Copeland when pressed on how he held on to the beer.

‘I kind of had a bit of a juggle, but the beer was the more important moment. Pretty proud.’

The fan spoke out on his technique after taking the catch, telling Channel 7: ‘There was nothing else that mattered apart from the beer and the ball’

He then delved into what was running through his mind when he made the catch with the fan, named Jack Bragg, saying: ‘There was no technique, it was just catch the ball.

‘That was all it was. There was nothing else that mattered apart from the beer and the ball.’

‘Unbelievable,’ Copeland added.

Gardener would go on to dismiss Knight, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Lauren Bell to bring up a total of 3-19.

She’d later strike an unbeaten 42 off 44 balls, in what was a player-of-the-match performance.

Healy also enjoyed a fantastic knock, being dismissed by Charlie Dean for 70 runs off 78 deliveries.

After the match, Gardener admitted she was riding high on confidence but added that her side would not be getting complacent.

It comes after Australia had taken a 6-0 lead in the 2023 Ashes before England came back to draw the series at 8-8.

‘I’ve taken a lot of confidence out of what I was able to do in the New Zealand series,’ Gardner told reporters.

‘To contribute with both bat and ball was something that I wanted to do to start the series off well and take some confidence into the back end of this series.

‘We know that there’s a long way to go in this Ashes series.

‘We realised that pretty quickly in England last time we were six-nil up and then that got chased down pretty quickly. We could be playing amazing cricket, but England is such a good team and they always find a way.’
