Wealthiest royal revealed… and it’s NOT the King: How Charles fails to prime wealthy record regardless of estimated £900m fortune

The finances of the Royal Family are something of a mystery – and that’s the way they like it.

A combination of legal barriers and careful planning on their part means it is almost  impossible to know exactly how much the Windsors have in their bank accounts.

Which means that the rest of us are left trying to estimate the scale of the treasure in the royal vaults.

It is telling that when the late Queen Elizabeth passed away in 2022, it was not disclosed what money was passed on to whom as, following custom, her will was sealed.

It is not always clear, either, just which of their assets are really theirs – and which might more reasonably be described as belonging to the state.

Buckingham Palace is estimated to be worth more than £1billion, for example, yet this particular residence only belongs to the King in an official capacity. It is not a family home.

So here, with ever growing scrutiny falling upon the vast sums of money under royal control, we present MailOnline’s best estimates of the wealth filling those Windsor wallets.

Prince William, £1.05billion

When William was asked by a schoolchild in 2023 how much he has in his bank account, he responded that he ‘didn’t know’.

However, the Prince was estimated to be worth more than £1billion in 2022, according to The Times.

This huge figure includes the Duchy of Cornwall that William gained control over when he became the Prince of Wales.

Established back in 1337, the private estate provides an income – typically around £24million a year – to the heir of the throne.

The estate itself has been valued at £1.3billion.

Any income William received from the Duchy can be spent as he wishes and he is not required to declare what tax he paid on it.

The estate is a thriving portfolio of land, property and investments including the Isles of Scilly, The Oval cricket ground and Dartmoor Prison.

William inherited around £10million from his late mother, Princess Diana. In 2002 he  inherited around £7million from the Queen Mother

King Charles, £900million

Since becoming King, Charles has grown even richer. Today he has an estimated worth of £900million, according to The Times.

He inherited the Duchy of Lancaster which is worth around £647million, from his late mother. At the same time, he passed the Duchy of Cornwall to the control of his eldest child William, now Prince of Wales.

Like William, the King receives an annual income from his estates, accounting for most of what has been historically known as the Privy Purse.

This revenue, which was around £27million in 2023/2024, is used for both official and private expenditure and for meeting the expenses of other members of the royal family.

Founded in the 13th century, the 18,433 hectare Duchy estate is a  portfolio of land and assets in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and Lincolnshire.

The Duchy also has significant commercial property including the Savoy Hotel in central London and financial investments.

Charles is thought to have inherited much of the late Queen Elizabeth’s personal fortune, which was estimated to be around £370million by The Sunday Times.

Passed monarch to monarch in this way, the legacy was free from tax.

He might also have inherited a large stamp collection, a portfolio of shares, art and jewellery.

King Charles is reportedly thought to be worth £900million

Princess Anne, £50million

Princess Anne is estimated to be worth around £50million, according to The Times.

The Princess Royal and her former husband Captain Mark Phillips were given Gatcombe Park from the late Queen in 1976. The 730-acre property was split following their divorce.

Anne now lives in the main Grade II listed building and the estate generates funds from farming and hosting the Festival of British Eventing every year.

It is not known what she inherited from the Queen and as a working royal, she is paid an income from the Sovereign Grant.

The late Queen’s daughter, Princess Anne, is thought to be worth £50million

Prince Michael of Kent, £31.5million

It has been suggested that Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin, Prince Michael of Kent, has amassed a £31.5million fortune.

He spent 20 years in the military and retired as a Major in 1981. Afterwards, he then went on to work in business and opened his own company, Cantium Services.

The prince retired from public life at 80 years old.

David Armstrong-Jones, £19.7million to £30.7million

Princess Margaret’s son, David Armstrong-Jones, is thought to be worth between £19.7 and £30.7million

He reportedly inherited most of his millions from his late mother who passed away in 2002.

The Earl set up his own furniture design company after attending the School for Craftsmen in Wood at Parnham House in Beaminster, Dorset as well as working at auction house Christie’s.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, £20million

Some estimates put Harry and Meghan’s combined fortune as high as £60million/.

The Times, however, stuck with a more sober £20million in 2022.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have struck some impressive commercial deals and Harry has had a considerable inheritance.

That said, the outgoings involved in a Hollywood lifestyle, not least the cost of private security, must be huge.

Prince Harry is not entitled to the same funds as his older brother and heir to the throne, Prince William.

But, like William, Harry is thought to have inherited £10million from Diana when he turned 25 years old.

He was also left around £7million from the Queen Mother, which he was eligible to receive after turning 40 years old.

Since stepping down as working royals, Harry and Meghan have ventured other means of making money.

Harry is thought to be paid around £1million a year for his work as chief impact officer at BetterUp.

The Prince is also understood to have signed a £32million four-book deal in 2021 and he published his first, Spare, in 2023.

Harry and Meghan also signed an £80million deal with Netflix in 2020, as well as a £20million Spotify deal, though this ended in 2023.

Meghan was thought to be paid £40,000 per episode of Suits and has signed various deals since.

In 2024, the Duchess announced she had signed agreement with Lemonada Media to record new podcast shows.

Though the value has never been confirmed, branding expert Andrew Bloch told The Sun at the time that he estimated it ‘could be worth roughly 10 per cent of Spotify deal, so around £1.9million’.

Meghan also released a children’s picture book called The Bench in 2021, and according to Daily Telegraph associate editor Camilla Tominey, she is believed to have received an advance of ‘between £250,000 and £500,000’ for the book.

Peter left the world of racing in September 2005, for a job as a manager at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh.

One of his more interesting business endeavours involved deploying his royal status to sell Jersey-produced milk in China in 2020.

In a television advert for Bright Dairies, shown on the country’s Dragon TV, Peter was seen being brought a glass of milk by a butler. The episode raised eyebrows.

‘This is what I drink,’ he says against a tagline reading: ‘British royal family member, Peter Phillips.’

Back in 2016, his company Sel UK – a sports management firm – was paid £750,000 to organise the street party in The Mall, known as the Patron’s Lunch.

However, he has previously said he did not secure the contract because of his relationship to the late monarch.

Tickets for the event were given to heads of charities supported by Queen Elizabeth and cost £150 each.

Zara Tindall, £15.6million

Also a non-working member of the Royal Family, Zara has turned to other means of making money and is a keen equestrian and businesswoman.

Zara has many endorsement deals with high-end luxury companies including Musto, Land Rover, Rolex and investment firm Artemis.

The mum-of-three enjoys a long-standing relationship with sailing and outdoor brand Musto – worth an estimated £500,000.

Prince Edward and Sophie, £10million

Prince Edward, the late Queen’s youngest son, and his wife Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh could be worth £10million according to The Times.

The couple had originally worked on business careers but were paid £250,000 in 2002 by the late Queen to step down from their companies and focus more on charity work.

Before marrying into royalty she worked as an accessory buyer for Jigsaw and lived in an apartment in Chelsea with her sister, Pippa Middleton, reportedly bought by their parents.

Since marrying into royalty, Kate boasts the late Princess Diana’s engagement ring and an impressive wardrobe.

Prince Andrew, £5million

Queen Elizabeth’s son, Prince Andrew, was described by The Times as being worth £5million.

He settled the sexual abuse lawsuit brought against him by Virginia Giuffre with an undisclosed figure – but no admission of guilt – in 2022. He has denied all wrong doing.

And, because he is no longer a front-line royal, he receives no income from the public purse.

He sold a seven-bedroom ski chalet he owned with former wife Sarah Ferguson in 2022.

Andrew, along with his then-wife Sarah, were given Sunninghill Park from the Queen as a wedding gift which they sold for £15million in 2007, according to The Times.
