A woman took a DNA test out of boredom and ended up uncovering a 60-year-old family secret – and she’s not sure whether to laugh or cry about it
A woman was left gobsmacked after a spur-of-the-moment DNA test revealed a 60 year old family bombshell. She always felt like the black sheep with her dark hair and curves, while her sisters were all “tall, blonde and thin”. She never questioned her differences until curiosity about her roots led her to join the DNA test craze. Taking to Reddit’s ‘Do you regret taking your DNA test, why or why not? thread, she confessed: “Yes and no.
“At 60-years-old I found out my biological father was a man I knew to be my uncle. I was raised never knowing this and not even sure if he knew. All my parents have passed. I grew up with three sisters. They were all tall/blond/thin. I was short, brunette, and curvy. I never fit in with them. “So, this new knowledge actually explained a lot.
“The sad part is I almost died when I was born, and I just know my mother thought god was punishing her for having had an affair. I don’t believe in such things, but she did. I don’t blame anyone, I’m not a saint, so I understand how things happen. ” Despite the drama they stir up, another Redditor chimed in about how their own DNA test solved some lifelong puzzles.

One user revealed: “I do not regret it. I was adopted and it was a useful tool that helped me find out who my biological family was. Through my test my bio mom found out her father was not the man that raised her, and that was unfortunate, so maybe she regrets that I took it.”
Another person finally got answers to a long-held suspicion that the man who raised her dad was not his biological father. A third person added: “After years of suspecting, questioning and never getting answers, and thinking that I was never going to be able to confirm anything because my dad died over a decade ago, I finally have them and it makes so many things make sense.
“I was kind of shocked to confirm my suspicions with science, but it was kind of validating also. Some of my family still won’t accept what I’ve found, but I am relieved to know the truth. Between the non-paternity event and my mum being adopted, there was so much that I didn’t know that I was able to find out by taking the test and researching on Ancestry. Even if my family never comes around, I don’t regret doing it.”.
