Russian despot Vladimir Putin is set to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian later this week, with fears of a deal allowing for a potential arms trade between the two
Vladimir Putin is set to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian this week, raising fears he may convince him to sign a deal allowing for a potential arms trade between the two nations. According to the Kremlin, the leaders are due to meet in Moscow to discuss their “comprehensive strategic partnership” on Friday.
The talks will focus on trade, transport, logistics, and pressing regional and global issues. There have been claims that Iran previously supplied Russia with hundreds of explosive drones to target Ukrainian infrastructure, but both countries have denied these allegations.
Now, Iran is reportedly seeking high-tech Russian arms, including air defence systems and fighter jets, to defend itself from potential Israeli attacks. Tehran is particularly interested in acquiring Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets, as international sanctions have limited its fleet.
A statement from the Kremlin confirmed the talks, saying: “On 17 January, Vladimir Putin will hold talks with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian, who will come to Moscow on an official visit.”
“Following the talks, Vladimir Putin and Masoud Pezeshkian will sign the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and Iran,” reports the Express US.
Russia and Iran have been bolstering their alliance since the start of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, with Iran providing Shahed drones used to target civilian infrastructure and power plants.

In October 2024, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov revealed plans for a strategic partnership with Iran “in the near future”. This was followed by confirmation from an Iranian government spokesperson two months later, stating an agreement would be finalised in January.
Meanwhile, in June last year, Putin signed a deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, securing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea in the event of aggression from adversaries.
The news comes after an extended period of tension throughout the world, with violence between Russia and Ukraine escalating through the use of North Korean troops deployed by Putin, and Israel and Iran-backed groups fighting in the Middle East.

Last week Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy did little to ease WW3 fears. In a speech on Thursday morning, David Lammy made an eerie declaration that security of Europe is now “on a knife edge”.
Earlier today, in a stark message to China, the US declared: “Today is not the day to start World War III “. The bold statement came from Brig. Gen. Doug Wickert, commander of the Air Force’s 412th Test Wing, during a briefing with his unit as they kicked off the new year.
