Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to ‘buy a defender’ on the back of their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Arne Slot‘s side extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points – though that could be cut to four when Arsenal take on Tottenham on Wednesday. The Gunners will have played a game more.
They are edging closer to the finish line in their bid to win their second-ever Premier League title in Slot’s first season in charge, but have now drawn two matches in a row.
Liverpool have by far scored the most goals in the league this season – 48, at least six more than any other side – but their defensive record has slipped of late, having conceded 12 goals in their last seven Premier League outings.
Virgil van Dijk continues to be the heart of the Reds’ defence, with first-choice partner Ibrahima Konate recently returning from injury. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson remain first pick at full back.
But Chris Wood was the latest man to expose the back line when he was played in on the left before scoring on Tuesday, and Carragher took to social media to call for back-up in defence at his former side.

The Reds defence has conceded seven goals in their last five league games after a solid start to the season at the back
Carragher said Liverpool ‘always look likely to concede despite topping the Premier League
He took to social media to get his point across, adding that Liverpool ‘should’ve won’ the game against Forest
‘Liverpool should’ve won tonight, but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win,’ Carragher wrote on X. ‘But the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season has gone. Always look likely to concede.’
He ended the post with: ‘Buy a defender!!!!’
Liverpool seem unlikely to dip into the transfer market this month – at least not for anything major – with Slot having cover in all three defensive positions.
Conor Bradley has excelled at right back, while Jarell Quansah remains in reserve at centre back.
Joe Gomez, who can play across the back four, is injured, while Kostas Tsimikas, the back-up left back, provided the assist for Diogo Jota’s equaliser against Forest.
Slot, meanwhile, was keen to focus on the attacking side of things in his post-match press conference.
‘In the second half we created a lot of chances but we have to give credit to Nottingham,’ he said. ‘They defend well and throw themselves in front of every cross.
‘We wanted three points but the players gave it everything they have. We played outstanding football in the second half and created chance after chance.
‘I can’t remember ever making a substitution that worked as quickly as the one to bring on Jota but I feel no pride in it. We needed goals. Scoring from a set piece was not something I had in mind when I brought him on.’
