Scientists united in perception that aliens exist and say one factor is ‘apparent’

‘There is actually a lot of ‘indirect’ or ‘theoretical’ evidence that alien life exists’ – a boffin said, as scientists agree that extraterrestrials are inhabiting parts of the universe

Alien-hunting boffins are united in their belief that extraterrestrials are real, research suggests.

Nearly nine in 10 (86%) astrobiologists, who study ET life for their job, agree that it is likely that little green men are living somewhere in the universe. Less than 2% disagreed while 12% chose to stay neutral, a survey of eggheads found.

Roughly the same number (88%) of boffs working in other areas, including biologists and physicists, agreed too. Scientists from Birmingham, Durham and Edinburgh universities, who carried out the study, reckon it’s no surprise as there’s a lot of evidence that alien life may exist.

They said: “One cannot say that astrobiologists are biased toward believing in extraterrestrial life, compared with other scientists.

“There is actually a lot of ‘indirect’ or ‘theoretical’ evidence that alien life exists.

“For example, we do now know that habitable environments are very common in the universe.”

The brainiacs – Durham prof Peter Vickers, Birmingham prof Henry Taylor and Edinburgh astrobiology expert Sean McMahon – said there are “several” habitable areas in our own solar system. These include the sub-surface oceans of Jupiter’s moon Europa and Saturn’s Enceladus, or potentially on one of Uranus’ moons.

They argued it also “seems relevant that Mars used to be highly habitable, with lakes and rivers of liquid water on its surface and a substantial atmosphere”.

“It is reasonable to generalise from here to a truly gargantuan number of habitable environments across the galaxy, and wider universe,” they said.

“We also know (since we’re here) that life can get started from non-life – it happened on Earth, after all.”

The findings come as astronomers increasingly question when, not if, aliens will be found.

Prof Catherine Heymans, Scotland’s Astronomer Royal, previously said: “It’s been obvious to many of us that we can’t be the only intelligent life out there.”
