Liverpool are flying at the top of the Premier League and still in with a chance of domestic cup success and their squad is only set to be bolstered in the January transfer window
Liverpool are currently leading the Premier League and Champions League, competing in the FA Cup and still harbour hopes of reaching the Carabao Cup final.
Arne Slot has achieved all this with just one summer signing – budget buy Federico Chiesa – as he has simply reshuffled Jurgen Klopp’s deck and ensured the Reds’ status as title contenders, when many expected they would fall away following the exit of the legendary German boss.
But now that January is upon us, will the Merseyside giants seek to strengthen their squad to help them compete on four fronts or will owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) choose not to spend heading into the season’s final stretch?
As always, Liverpool won’t splash the cash just for the sake of it and the noise coming out of Anfield is that Slot is content with his squad. The Reds will only make moves for players in the coming weeks if someone they’ve been keeping an eye on suddenly becomes available, reports the Mirror.
They don’t believe any area requires immediate attention, even with injuries at centre-back. Here we examine the names rumoured to be moving to Liverpool this month to give you an idea of the likelihood of any such transfers, as well as the chances of any departures.
Milos Kerkez
This might be explored in the summer, but Bournemouth will demand a hefty fee for the left back and there will be competition from Manchester City and Manchester United.
Liverpool could clearly do with reinforcing this area of the squad, given veteran Andrew Robertson’s marked decline in form and doubts over whether Kostas Tsimikas has the quality to become a regular first choice in the position.
Antonee Robinson
The Fulham left back is being watched by a number of top Premier League clubs, including Manchester United. Liverpool may be in the market for a left back in the summer, but they have no plans to sign one this month.
Ryan One
The Sheffield United striker has been linked with Liverpool recently but is not understood to be a target at this stage. At only 18, he is a player a number of clubs are keeping an eye on due to his potential, but no move is expected from the Reds.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
This one gained traction in the last couple of weeks when it became apparent the Napoli winger was set for a move this month. Liverpool, like many clubs, are fans of the Georgian winger but they haven’t entered the bidding war for him. PSG seem poised to seal the deal. A major U-turn would be needed now.
Stefanos Tzimas
The young Greek forward has been heavily linked in the past few days, but there’s no interest in the PAOK man.
Martin Zubimendi
There had been rumours that Liverpool might revisit signing Zubimendi in this window and there was a sense that perhaps the Spanish midfielder might be regretting his decision to reject a move last summer. However, the Reds decided to move on from him once it was clear that he wasn’t interested in making the move then. Now, Arsenal have seemingly persuaded the Real Sociedad player to make a switch to North London in the summer. It was never going to happen after the summer.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Real Madrid made an unsuccessful attempt to sign him this month, with Liverpool swiftly rejecting their approach. The Spanish heavyweights considered initiating another round of talks with the Reds but haven’t yet made a move.
Liverpool are not interested in selling and are focused on persuading him to sign a new contract.
Kaide Gordon
Liverpool have recalled the young striker from his loan stint at Norwich due to a lack of first-team opportunities at the Championship side. He only managed 10 appearances for the Canaries, and Liverpool are now open to loan offers from other clubs for the second half of the season.
Ben Doak
The Scottish international is currently thriving during his loan spell at Middlesbrough and is keen to stay there for the rest of the season. However, Crystal Palace have already made a £15m bid which was promptly turned down.Liverpool won’t entertain any offers below £30m. If a bid at that level were to come in, they would have to consider it.
Tyler Morton
After impressing in the FA Cup third round victory over Accrington Stanley, he spoke about having a decision to make. Slot wanted to keep him over the summer as backup after missing out on Zubimendi. While no firm offers have been made yet, there is genuine interest.
Jayden Danns
Liverpool are open to suitable loan offers for the teenage forward, but only if they believe it will benefit his development.
James McConnell
Just like Danns, Liverpool will contemplate the right offers but so far none have come in. He’ll get game time in the FA Cup. Blackburn showed interest last summer.
