The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for dense fog, which is expected to cause significant travel disruption across large parts of England and Wales this morning.

The warning, in place until 11am on Thursday, stretches from Exeter and Cardiff up to York, covering major cities including Birmingham, Oxford, and Peterborough. Visibility is predicted to drop below 100 metres in the thickest patches, leading to hazardous conditions on roads, railways, and at airports.

Motorists are being urged to exercise extra caution while driving in foggy conditions. The Met Office has provided essential tips to help drivers stay safe:

Before setting off, ensure your fog lights are in proper working order to improve visibility in dense conditions. While driving, maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front to allow for safer stopping distances.

Reduce your speed as you enter foggy areas, and avoid using full beams, as their light can reflect off the fog and worsen visibility. Once conditions improve and the fog clears, remember to switch off your fog lights to avoid dazzling other drivers.

With the possibility of sudden banks of fog and drifting patches, drivers are advised to check their mirrors frequently and be prepared to slow down.

The dense fog may also affect flights, with delays or cancellations possible at major airports. Passengers are urged to stay updated by checking their airline’s website or social media channels for the latest information and to allow extra time for travel to the airport.

For those travelling by train, bus, or ferry, delays are also likely. The Met Office recommends checking timetables and amending travel plans if needed.

This fog warning follows a recent cold snap that saw temperatures plummet to -18.7°C in Altnaharra, Scotland, the coldest January night in the UK for 15 years. Snow and ice caused significant disruption last week, including runway closures at Manchester Airport and road closures in Cornwall and Devon.

Travellers are being advised to pack essentials, such as medication or baby supplies, in case of delays. With foggy conditions expected to linger in some areas until late morning, taking precautions and staying informed can make journeys safer and less stressful.

The Met Office is monitoring the situation closely, and updates will be provided as the weather evolves. Stay safe and plan ahead if you’re travelling today.
