Living costs are climbing at bewildering speeds. Energy bills are skyrocketing and weekly food shops feeling like luxury spending sprees so naturally Brits are desperately looking to save a few pounds in any way they can. The answer many are searching for could be in their phone bill.

Money-saving maestro Martin Lewis has revealed how to cut your monthly phone bill to as low as £6.90. On his television show, Lewis got straight to the nitty-gritty, remarking: “Mobile phones, are you paying too much? Something interesting has happened over the last couple of years.

“If you’re an existing mobile phone user, you have had mid-contract price hikes often – of 18% a couple of years ago, 8% last year.”

The consumer champion added: “Prices have been going up and up. At the same time, the cost of new customer SIM deals – that’s where you just switch the little chip in the back of your phone – have been plummeting.

“So, look at this. For a 50GB two years ago, you’d be paying £9 unlimited minutes, unlimited texts. Now you can get it as cheap as £3 a month for a 50GB.”, reports Bristol Live.

Brits are buzzing as they’ve clocked onto a massive drop in mobile data prices, especially for those who don’t chomp through the gigabytes. While the 5GB per month users haven’t seen a huge dip, savvy consumers are now bagging heaps of data for much less dosh, so it’s worth checking out the spread.

Thrifty Brits are all over social media, boasting about their killer deals on phone contracts. One chuffed user, known as technicslover on a popular forum, raved: “I got your £6.90 Lebara deal a couple of years ago and it’s been great. 12GB and roaming included. Absolutely perfect. No price increases either.”

Another said: “I pay £8/month for 20GB+ and unlimited calls/texts.”

And a third bragged about their smart move to pay-as-you-go, sharing: “I opted for pay as you go. I buy a £10 data pack every month which gives me free calls and texts. Lowest contract quote I got was £22 a month, but excluding calls to mobiles.”

The Money Saving Expert (MSE) website, brainchild of Martin Lewis, is also throwing in some top tips to help Brits slash their mobile bills. Despite mobile tariffs taking a nosedive recently, MSE points out that loads of people are still shelling out more than they need to, just because they haven’t switched it up.

To dodge these extra costs, MSE has a dead simple three-step plan to get started. Kick off with a text – it’s as easy as sending “INFO” to 85075 to see if you can hop over to a cheaper deal without any fuss.

Money Saving Expert (MSE) suggests: “The first thing to do is to check if you’re one of the 14 million people who are out of contract on their mobile and therefore free to cut costs by moving to a far cheaper deal. Ofcom forces firms to tell you this via a free text.”

Customers looking to switch mobile providers typically get a quick response, although those with Three, Smarty or iD Mobile may have to prove their identity by sending in their date of birth. Before making the change, ensure there’s no early cancellation fee.

“Some firms write their text to try and persuade you to stay, but if there’s no termination charge, you’re free to leave,” say the experts at MSE.
