Manchester United fans brutally taunted a gutted Rangers fan who was in the home end after Bruno Fernandes scored an injury-time winner.

United hosted Rangers in a dramatic evening at Old Trafford as the Reds captain came to the rescue with a brilliantly taken added-time goal to see United pick up three crucial points in the Europa League.

However, the game was overshadowed by chaos in the stands as hundreds of Rangers fans purchased tickets in the home end and made no secret of their allegiances, especially after Cyriel Dessers’ wonderful equaliser with two minutes of normal time remaining looked to have salvaged the Gers a point.

Footage posted to X showed a group of United fans sticking it to a Rangers supporter who had a seat in the home end. While there is no suggestion the fan in question had done anything wrong by buying the ticket, he may well regret his decision to sit among Red Devils supporters.

The clip shows the fan stood with a face like thunder, his arms crossed and gritting his teeth as he tried to ignore United supporters repeatedly singing towards him. And it went down a storm on social media.

Fans lapped up the post as one user poked fun, saying: “His face is priceless!” A second laughed: “That fella’s face”. A third added: “Get him out of there! His face man!” While a fourth found the video hilarious, saying: “Superb content hahahahahaha”.

The incident appeared to pass peacefully, with no suggestion that either the Rangers supporter or the fans around him were involved in any altercation. However, fighting broke out elsewhere around the stadium as fans clashed, despite Manchester United releasing a statement insisting they took the ‘strictest possible measures’ to prevent Rangers from buying home tickets.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) slammed the club and the “inadequate” reaction from police and security to the disorder, just a year on from when thousands of Galatasaray fans swarmed the United home end for a Champions League tie last season.

“We’ve had many disturbing reports from last night highlighting incidents with Rangers fans in home sections,” MUST said in a statement.

“Some were occupying seats of home fans, refusing to move and even threatening them when they tried to take their own seats. In the worst cases there were incidents of fighting as a result of these away fans being in home sections, with no police/security response.

“Certainly no United fan should face any sanction as a result of away fans being in home sections and not being dealt with by police or security.

“We have relayed to the club all issues sent to us but encourage anyone with information or evidence to report them directly via feedback@manutd.co.uk so they are formally logged.”

“What is particularly frustrating for our supporters is we’ve had incidents in recent weeks of security snatch teams entering the stadium to eject our own fans for minor incidents such as vaping.

“Similarly warning our fans about standing persistently in seats in areas such as the Stretford End where fans have traditionally stood without incident for 25 years!”
