Aston Villa‘s Tyrone Mings was left in tears on the pitch against West Ham as he suffered a new injury.

The defender only just made a comeback from a long knee injury layoff in October, before returning again in December and January having missed multiple games. Mings pulled up before half-time after appearing to injure his knee in a painful challenge.

After attempting to continue, he had to be withdrawn before the break when it was obvious he couldn’t go on with him unable to shake the issue. Ian Maatsen came on to replace him, forcing Unai Emery to shuffle his defence pack.

Former Villa defender Stephen Warnock insisted on BBC Radio 5 Live that Mings should have been substituted sooner: “Tyrone Mings has done something serious,” Warnock commented. “They should’ve got him off earlier, you can leave him on and it gets more serious. I know it’s not a nice situation but you have to deal with that.”

Mings’ road to recovery had been a long one after his severe knee injury picked up on the first weekend of the 2023-24 season.

The 31-year-old didn’t make it back onto the pitch until October this year, spending over 14 months out of action. Since his return, he’s featured in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, and Sunday’s match against West Ham marked his fifth consecutive league start.

The full extent of Tyrone Mings’ latest injury remains unclear, but it’s left Aston Villa with issues at the back. Diego Carlos has been sold to Fenerbahce and boss Emery hasn’t brought in any reinforcements to fill the gap.

Before Villa’s Champions League defeat against Monaco this week, Mings confessed he’s still not over the past 18 months of injury woes. “I would say another 3 or 4 months of playing continuously is when I will stop thinking about the injury,” he said

“The fact that I’ve been out, and to stop being so rusty in certain situations – there are so many things that you only experience in a game. There is no grace period – you’re either good or you’re not.”
