Carlisle United have sacked their second manager of the season.
The club rock bottom of League Two are in crisis and are said to have dismissed former Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson after just 25 games in charge.
Williamson was relieved of his duties on Monday morning with the Blues in a wretched run of form. Carlisle were hammered 5-1 at home by Swindon Town on Saturday, leaving them bottom of the Football League and five points from safety.
Carlisle released a statement confirming Williamson had been sacked, which read: “Carlisle United Football Club can confirm that head coach Mike Williamson has this morning been relieved of his duties and has left the club with immediate effect.
“Everyone at the club would like to thank Mike for his efforts during his time at the club. The club will give a further update in the coming days.”
The former defender, who played 171 times for Newcastle between 2010 and 2016, with the vast majority coming in the Premier League, had only taken over as manager in September after leaving his role at MK Dons.
The 41-year-old had overhauled the squad during the winter window with 11 incomings at Brunton Park, but with the Cumbrians staring down the barrel of back-to-back relegation into the National League and Williamson only winning five games at the helm, a decision has been made.
Carlisle finished 16 points off safety in League One last year but decided to keep the faith with Paul Simpson. However, after three defeats in the club’s first four league games of the season, Simpson was sacked with Mark Birch taking interim charge for three weeks.
