Harry Kane is playing his cards close to the chest amidst rumours that he might make a sensational return to the Premier League.

The England captain, 31, transferred to Bayern Munich from Tottenham 18 months ago in an £82million deal and has continued his goalscoring form in Germany.

However, it’s been speculated this past week that the striker’s contract includes a release clause allowing him to be bought for only £54million when it becomes active in January 2026. It was reported that last month a buy-out sum of £67m was active during the recent January transfer window.

The reports opened the door to the idea that Kane could make a return to England, but he refused to be drawn into the talk when pressed on the matter on Friday.

After scoring two penalties in Bayern’s 3-0 win against Werder Bremen, Kane remained coy on the links, replying: “What I can say is that I’m very happy at FC Bayern. No comment on the clause.”

A number of English clubs, including his former club Tottenham and the persistent suitors Manchester United, have been linked to making a potential offer. However, the most interesting rumour is of Arsenal’s interest as they look to sign a new leading striker for next season.

Despite the fierce rivalry between Spurs and Arsenal, ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson believes that a bold move for Harry Kane should be attempted by the Gunners.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he declared: “Arsenal will buy him,” and when pressed on whether he was serious, he doubled down, saying, “Why not? £64m, why not? Sol Campbell did [make the move]. People will go, ‘Oh he’s this age and that age’, but Arsenal need now.

“If Arsenal haven’t won the League, you’ve got to take a chance. You’ve got to take a chance, buy someone that’s proven. I wouldn’t be surprised, and when you’re Harry Kane and you’ve been told you can go for £64m, there’s only a couple of teams who could buy him.

“Maybe Tottenham will buy him back but he’ll have to win something at Bayern Munich to go back to Tottenham. If you’ve not won anything at Bayern Munich, you’re not going back to Tottenham to win nothing.”
