Three people were rushed to hospital for treatment of the injuries they sustained in the horrifying attack that unfolded in the middle of the afternoon in Dublin’s city centre
The victims of the random Dublin stabbings had their faces slashed in broad daylight as the incident is “not believed to be terror related”. Three Irish people were injured in the horrifying scenes that unfolded in Stoneybatter in the north side of the city centre, sources told the Irish Mirror.
The attacker is believed to be South American and all of the people who sustained injuries have been taken to hospital where their injuries are not believed to life-threatening at this time. One man has been arrested in connection to the incident as gardai (Irish police) said there is no risk to the wider public at this time.
A number of streets in the area had been sealed by gardai as they probed the “serious” incident. They have since reopened. Local Sinn Fein councillor Janice Boylan said the “whole area is shook” by the incident.
She told Dublin Live: “It’s terrifying to say the least that on a Sunday peaceful afternoon that people would be out going about their business and to be attacked in such a vicious way.”
A local resident said she witnessed the arrest. She told the Irish Times: “I saw a lot of garda cars arrive really fast. They all jumped out at exactly the same time. I saw a guy running and they dived on him outside a house.
“He just screamed and screamed and screamed ‘leave me alone.’ He was terrified, like someone who wasn’t expecting that to happen. And then it all stopped.”
Local shopkeeper Cindy Kinsella said “As it turns out there was three people stabbed, I didn’t see it. I did hear shouting, and by the time I went out and looked to the left here, I couldn’t see anything except a bike on the middle of the road.
“And it was probably four or five minutes later before I realised there was someone injured at the top of the road. Then the emergency services and the guards came and I subsequently found out what was going on.”
She added: “Whoever was injured in the lane was shouting for help. I was serving customers and by the time I went out, I couldn’t see anything. He had gone into a house.”
“Absolutely nothing, we are 25 years here, never seen anything like it, ever. Complete shock.”
A garda spokesperson said: “A man has been arrested and is currently detained at a Garda station in the North City under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. Three males assaulted in the course of the incident have been taken to hospital for treatment, two males for serious but not life-threatening injuries, one male with less serious injuries.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact the Bridewell Garda Station on (01) 6668200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
