Philadelphia Eagles fans flocked to Broad Street to celebrate their Super Bowl victory – but scenes quickly turned ugly as they brawled in the streets
‘Fly Eagles Fly’ quickly turned into ‘Fight Eagles Fight’.
The Philadelphia Eagles put a stop to the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynasty in the early hours of Monday morning as they picked them apart in the Super Bowl.
And as Jalen Hurts lifted the Vince Lombardi trophy, Eagles fans took to the streets of Philadelphia to celebrate their victory. However, scenes quickly turned ugly as American police estimated some 10,000 Eagles fans were out on Broad Street and surrounding areas.
Shocking images have emerged online, with one individual seen burning a Travis Kelce Chiefs jersey while shouting “f*** Taylor Swift!”
One group of fans were able to pull down a traffic light before dumping it on a truck – while others climbed on cops cars and danced into the early hours of the morning.
Some fans even brawled in the middle of the street.
Police were out on foot, motorbikes and on horseback all lined up in front of City Hall in an attempt to deter fans from bad behaviour. And, at 1:35am with an alert to mobile phones, they ordered the crowd to disperse.
Officers on horseback were brought in to break the crowds apart.
In a message before the game, Philadelphia mayor Mayor Cherelle Parker urged fans to behave responsibly. “Please, Philadelphia, I implore you as your mayor: Do not climb light poles or anything else.
“I know this comes up every time we have an outdoor celebration after our Philly teams win, and I get it. But folks, climbing or attempting to climb up a light pole, or a bus shelter, or really any structure for that matter – it can lead to tragedy.”
Kevin Bethel, Philadelphia police commissioner, also promised to have the city’s police department with “all hands on deck” for the celebrations.
“We know that there is going to be a lot of celebration when the Eagles win – let that sit for a minute – but we also want you to do it in a responsible way.”
Over in New Orleans the celebrations inside the Eagles locker room were just as raucous.
A shirtless Saquon Barkley chuged beers while team owner Jeffrey Lurie danced in the background and Super Bowl MVP Hurts partied with a cigar in his mouth.
