Lisandro Martinez has fired back at Paul Scholes on Instagram after being criticised by the Manchester United legend.

Martinez – who arrived at Old Trafford for £55m from Ajax in 2022 – has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in a 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace earlier this month.

But Scholes still took a swipe at the Argentine centre back on the latest episode of The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, saying: ‘Even when he’s fit he’s not good enough to win the Premier League with.’

Martinez has now issued a furious response on social media.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday evening, Martinez wrote: ‘This jinx guy is really hurting….You put him in Argentina, and he wouldn’t survive.’

Scholes raised doubts about Martinez last month, as he revealed that he would be happy to sell him as part of a major rebuild at United.

Martinez was one of eight first-team stars that Scholes was willing to move on, alongside the likes of English duo Luke Shaw and Mason Mount.

Scholes has now hit out at Martinez again, after also laying into fellow centre backs Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

Speaking about De Ligt, Scholes said: ‘His (De Ligt’s) age (25) and his amount of clubs already concerns me. He was brilliant at Ajax, he seems to be getting worse as he gets older. Bayern Munich, Juventus, they’ve let him go for some reason.

‘Where are your ambitions? I’m talking about getting a team to win the Premier League. Are you going to win the Premier League with De Ligt and Yoro as your centre halves?

‘You (a fan) said you think they’re quite good. Is quite good good enough?’

He added on Yoro: ‘Look, he’s a young player, but I haven’t liked what I’ve seen so far.

‘Did you see the Southampton game? He’s a young player, he’s one centre half I would keep, when I talk about that spine and two centre halves.’

Martinez won the Carabao Cup in his first season at United, and returned from an injury-hit campaign to win the FA Cup at the end of last term.

Scholes also criticised Leny Yoro (left) and Matthijs de Ligt (right) for their performances since signing for United

His fitness has remained an issue this season and he is now not expected to play again until the latter stages of 2025.

But he appears determined to prove Scholes wrong after being singled out by the United icon.
