Former Rangers and Newcastle United star Peter Lovenkrands has finally opened up the viral meme of his dog, Kobe, which he has admitted has followed him around
Ex-Premier League star and Rangers cult hero Peter Lovenkrands has opened up about his dog.
Lovenkrands’ legacy in the beautiful game has boiled down to a viral meme that started 12 years ago. Lovenkrands shared a message on X, then known as Twitter: “12 years old today. Happy birthday my beautiful boy.”
And one fan responded: “Hopefully grows up and scores goals against Celtic, just like his old man!”
However, there was one glaring error in his response – Lovenkrands hadn’t shared a photo of his son, he had shared a photo of his dog.
And the resulting image of a mocked up photo of Lovenkrands’ dog, Kobe, celebrating in a Rangers shirt goes viral on social media weekly.
Kobe passed away five years ago, but his legacy lives on in the media. Football fans love to dress up as him on Halloween and one cheeky fan even donned a dog mask and Rangers top at the darts: “Twitter royalty at the darts tonight.. It’s Peter Lovenkrands’ son,” one fan joked.
“My dog died five or six years ago, and he’s still flying,” Lovenkrands told the latest edition of The Warm Up.
“He’s actually been sold, somebody has done it with a Newcastle strip on. There’s a wee kid doing it as a Newcastle strip.
“When I saw it at the darts, I was like, no way!
“I swear, somebody’s got it tattooed! I got sent it on my phone. It’s on a calf. That’s a Magaluf shout or something like that.”
“It comes in waves, especially around Halloween, Christmas, when people start dressing up, I’ve seen people walk through airports like that with the head on.
“I get sent them all the time on social media. My kids now are at school and every time they go to school people are like ‘I’m going to dress like this!’.”
