A British elderly woman and her son have been discovered dead at their home in southern Spain. The police suspect that the 90-year-old woman starved to death after her 63-year-old son passed away due to natural causes.

Local law enforcement found their bodies after being requested to perform a welfare check. They had to forcibly enter the property in Alhaurin el Grande, a half-hour drive inland from the Costa del Sol resort of Fuengirola.

Post-mortem examinations have been conducted, with further tests now underway. However, Civil Guard officers investigating the case have concluded that both deaths were due to natural causes, with no evidence suggesting they were victims of a crime.

The British pair were known to local social services, and town hall employees raised concerns days after an ambulance was called to their home to aid the unnamed woman. Her son is believed to have been her registered carer, though it remains unclear whether he also had health issues.

Last Thursday, two British pensioners were found deceased at their Costa Blanca residence. Firefighters found the bodies of the man and woman, described by police sources as friends living together, at their home near the small town of San Fulgencio, a 45-minute drive south of Alicante.

Local council social services staff had raised concerns. There were no signs of violence at the scene, and a subsequent post-mortem supported the theory that the pair died of natural causes.

The man was 82 and the woman 74. Both are believed to have suffered chronic illnesses and had been categorised by social services as “vulnerable”.

The area where they were living is on a residential estate which is extremely popular with foreign pensioners.
