Ruben Amorim admits he has questioned his decision to take the Manchester United job when he did – instead of waiting until the summer.

Amorim was keen to postpone his move from Sporting Lisbon to Old Trafford when he held negotiations with United bosses last November.

The Portuguese wanted to begin his reign ahead of next season and with new signings, instead of in the middle of a campaign. And in the wake of his woeful first few months in charge, Amorim admits he might have made a mistake.

United have won just four of 14 league games since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag. And he said: “I think that’s clear, it’s common sense.

“When you start a season, it’s completely different. You feel things, have a pre-season and time to change things you feel are necessary in a team and a squad.

“That is clear. That was the choice so I don’t want to talk about that. I had my reasons to ask for it. I knew it would be tough and a risk, but it’s Manchester United and you can’t say no.”

Amorim stopped short of admitting he’s questioned his decision to accept the job at all, while he refused to discuss if INEOS had moved the goalposts in terms of how they sold it to him.

But he said: “We made a decision and we go all the way. Sometimes it’s frustrating, and when you hear out loud four wins in 14 games for Manchester United, even in another club, it’s really frustrating.

“You get really frustrated and angry. But let’s move on, and we can change that in the next game.”

A next game which just happens to be a trip to face a rejuvenated Everton side under the returning David Moyes.

Everton have won four of their last five league games, to climb above United in the Premier League table. It has been the sort of lift United wanted under Amorim, but never got. And Amorim admits former United boss Moyes is doing a better job with Everton than he is with United.

Amorim, who will welcome back Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro for the trip to Goodison Park, added: “The simple thing is that David Moyes is doing a better job than me, it’s quite simple.

“And then small things like winning one game, winning two games, getting that belief.

“The pressure is not the same (at Everton). But we have to give merit to the players of Everton, and especially to the coach of Everton. We need to do the same as them.”
