Manchester United found themselves 2-0 down at Everton at half-time on Saturday after two woeful pieces of defending, leaving Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand fuming
A bewildered Rio Ferdinand took to social media to share his shock at Manchester United’s shambolic defence after a blunder-filled 45 minutes.
The Red Devils went into Saturday’s away clash at Everton sitting precariously in 15th place in the Premier League, only to find themselves trailing by two goals at half-time, with Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure getting on the scoresheet.
United’s defensive woes intensified as Doucoure netted a goal following Harry Maguires lapse in concentration. Maguire was caught off guard following Andre Onanas initial save as Doucoure powered through to secure Evertons lead, plunging United deeper into potential defeat.
Ferdinand didn’t hold back his irritation, venting on X soon after the goal: “What have I just witnessed…” And in the second half, before United pulled a goal back through a Bruno Fernandes free kick, he elaborated further.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Ferdinand said: “I’m sitting here and I don’t know if I have seen a United team this bad. It has been embarrassing in all different facets of the game.
“Yes, we can talk about quality, you talk about talent, but one thing which is unforgiveable is a lack of desire. There’s instances in this game where Man Utd need to look at this Everton team and take examples from it. It’s embarrassing to sit here and watch it.”
Uncertain times lie ahead for United after manager Amorim conceded David Moyes is outperforming him hands down at the club, reports the Mirror.
Moyes, handpicked by Sir Alex Ferguson to be his successor at Old Trafford in 2013, has rekindled Everton’s spirit since taking over from Sean Dyche. His managerial prowess has led to an impressive tally of top-flight wins since his January comeback, the most recent of which propelled Everton above United in the league standings.
When queried on Friday why Everton, now ascended to 14th, have felt an uplift under new management while United have floundered, Amorim conceded: “Simple thing… David Moyes is doing a better job than me. It’s quite simple.
“And then small things like winning one game, winning two games, that belief. The pressure is also not the same.
“I don’t know but I think we have to give merit to the players of Everton and especially to the coach of Everton and that’s all. We need to do the same.”
The Portuguese coach was honest in his comments, having previously admitted he’s not performing as well this season as his predecessor, Erik ten Hag.
