The young woman was riding an electric bicycle on the grounds of the University of Nottingham in the early hours of the morning when the horror crash happened, police said
A young woman has died after being involved in a crash while riding an electric bicycle on the grounds of a university campus.
The unnamed woman, 21, suffered serious injuries in the horror crash at the University of Nottingham’s park campus in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She was rushed to hospital but tragically died of her injuries, despite the best efforts of medical staff. Nottinghamshire Police said her parents had been informed.
Detective Sergeant Paul Clark: “This is a tragic incident that I know will come as a shock to all who knew and loved the victim.
“Officers will remain at the scene for much of the day as we work to understand the sequence of events that led to this young woman’s tragic and untimely death.
“As that work continues our thoughts are with her family at this very difficult time.”
Two Lime bikes were visible inside a police cordon, which was in place at the campus until just before 12 noon on Tuesday. Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses.
A student who did not want to be named told Nottinghamshire Live: “We heard about the incident through friends and online and came to see it in person.
“It’s shocking to see it in real life with the road closed off, especially after what’s been happening in Nottingham recently.”
A security officer for the university told Nottinghamshire Live a “tragic accident” had taken place overnight, with a police officer confirming that there were two bikes involved.
Lime launched an e-bike rental scheme in Nottingham, in partnership with the city council, in 2023 and offered students a 50% discount for university students.
Lime charges a fixed rate of £1 to unlock a bike and then 19p per minute of hire, but University of Nottingham students are eligible for a 50% discount on the unlock and hire charges.
