A deep sea fisherman has shown off his latest catch, a nightmarish creature with a huge, bulbous body, shrunken eyes and gaping mouth that makes it look like something from another planet
A fisherman was left shocked after he caught a strange-looking creature which has been dubbed an “alien”. With its large, bulbous body, tiny eyes and gaping mouth, it’s easy to mistake this fish for something out of this world.
The terrifying discovery was made in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean by deep sea fisherman Roman Fedortsov. Althought it looks like it could have been taken straight from a movie set, he identified the creature as an Aptocyclus ventricosus, also known as the smooth lumpfish or smooth lumpsucker.
In his caption, Fedortsov dubbed the fish “beautiful” and apparently “edible”.
This species of marine ray-finned fish, which can grow up to 44cm, is found in the deep sea. Its unique appearance seems to have been exaggerated by some swelling, likely due to the pressure change when brought to the surface, resulting in its bloated body, according to What’s The Jam.
Fedortsov has dedicated his life to searching for creatures of the unknown. The brave man spends most of his life at sea on a trawler in Murmansk in the northwest part of Russia and has garnered more than 600K followers on Instagram who are chomping at the bit to see his next frightening undersea creature.
Roman recently shared a snap of an almost translucent catch which sported unusual fins, a terrifyingly-ghostly eye and a jagged tail. The fish looked as if it had been sewn together due to the unique markings that covered its whole body.
Users piled in their hundreds to comment on the unusual creature. One person dubbed it ‘Megamind’ after the cartoon villain played by Will Ferrell, who sports a characteristically large head.
Another person likened it to ‘The Dark Lord’ from Harry Potter.
The deep-sea angler has been in the spotlight before for reeling in some bizarre and astonishing specimens. One of his catches was likened to a character out of a Dr Seuss book, complete with organs protruding from its mouth. He also snagged an odd ‘dragon’-like fish sporting yellow peepers.
In addition, Fedortsov once posted on his Instagram (@rfedortsov_official_account) snaps of an extraordinary discovery: a prehistoric ‘goblin’ shark.
