More than 250,000 Canadian citizens and residents have signed a petition to revoke Musk’s citizenship following his close relationship with Trump, who has taken repeated shots at Canada’s sovereignty
More than 250,000 people have signed a parliamentary petition urging Canada to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship and passport.
Canadian citizens and residents have signed the petition following Musk is a citizen of South Africa, where he was born, Canada and the United States. The tech billionaire has become one of Trump’s most visible allies since the president began his second term. Earlier this month in a bizarre joint interview, the two said they had become best friends.
The petition reads: “He has used his wealth and power to influence our elections.
“He has now become a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty.”
Musk responded on his social media platform X by simply writing: “Canada is not a real country.”
The Tesla boss was able to get Canadian citizenship after he moved there in 1989 as his mother was born in Canada before moving to South Africa.
The petition opened five days ago and has been supported by NDP MP Charlie Angus, known as Canada’s “punk-rock” politician.
Angus said: “People are really angry, and people are coming together to defend their democracy … and saying this man should have no claim on calling himself Canadian in any capacity for his profoundly anti-democratic views.”
It is mostly symbolic, because to actually revoke citizenship in Canada, a person had to have committed fraud, misrepresented themselves or knowingly hid information on an immigration or citizenship application.
Since Musk and Trump’s assaults on the country, Canadians have responded by cancelling trips to the U.S., boycotting American products and booing the national anthem at NBA and NHL games.
