Coffee lovers, this is what you’ve been waiting for, a way to reduce your daily caffeine hit
Brit coffee lovers could be paying more for their morning brew than their after work pint, an expert has forecast. Groggy workers needing a perk up in the morning are being hit by the soaring price of coffee beans.
Coffee sellers are now expected to pay £2.85 per pound with the price of the Arabica bean being the highest in 50 years.
Heidi Phillip-Smith, an in-house barista revealed we will shortly be seeing the cost of a coffee overtake the price of a beer.
Heidi said: “The cost of coffee has been rising steadily, but with bean shortages, supply chain disruptions, and inflation, we’re on track to see café coffee out-price a pint within the next five to 10 years – potentially by 2030.”
Even the price of a flat white (£3.90) would differ considerably from a pint of cold beer £5.09 – a gap of just £1.18.
A cheaper alternative to buying your coffee could very well be making your own at home with your own coffee machine. Heidi said: “You cut out single-use cups, reduce waste, and get full control over your coffee’s quality and sourcing.”
At the moment 2.5billion disposable cups are thrown into our bins, and taken into landfill sites every year. It then takes hundreds of years for the plastic inside the cup to decompose, so switching to a bean-to-cup coffee machine that you can operate yourself at home would be good for the environment as well as your bank balance.
Heidi explained: “You get barista-quality coffee at home for a fraction of the cost – potentially saving hundreds of pounds a year. Instead of paying nearly £4 a day, home-brewed coffee can cost as little as 25p per cup”.
The most expensive coffee in the world per pound of coffee beans is Kopi Luwak coming in at £300.
To many this luxury coffee has a different name – ‘Cat coffee’ which is aptly named as the beans have to go through the digestive system of a civet cat. In simpler terms, it’s cat poop coffee!
Ultimately if you don’t want to try a cat poop brew and would prefer a cheaper alternative, upgrading your coffee machine and reducing your cafe visits might be a sure-fire way to save you a fortune on your early morning caffeine fix.
