Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has opened up about her ‘inherited’ surname, and how much it means to her in a new interview ahead of the launch of her new Netflix show, With Love, Meghan
Even after Meghan and Harry wed, people still referred to the former actress as Markle, because that it how they knew her for years. However, she dropped that surname, but as a member of the Royal Family, she no longer officially has as surname.
Prince Harry sticks to his official title too, officially known asa Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and since Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, their chidren Archie and Lilibet have snagged the Prince and Princess titles.
However, now they are living Stateside, the couple have decided that they need something more practical for day-to-day life. On the eve of her Netflix debut ‘With Love, Meghan,’ she spoke to PEOPLE magazine saying that the family has changed their title into their family name.
She gushes over this name-sharing as a precious slice of her romance with Harry, something they can treasure as a fam.
Meghan said: “It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognised how meaningful that would be to me until we had children.”
She added: “I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”
Prince William and Kate Middleton followed in the footsteps of Charles and Diana when they decided to use their titles as surnames for their children, George, Charlotte and Louis, during their school years. The young royals are known as the Cambridges, a nod to their parents’ titles before Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
Similarly, William and Harry were known as Wales during their schooling and military service. Meanwhile, Meghan Markle is set to launch her much-awaited new show on Netflix tomorrow.
The Duchess will be sharing her top gardening, cooking and hosting tips, joined by celebrity friends like Mindy Kaling, Abigail Spencer, Delfina Blaquier and Roy Choi. The show is part of the couple’s lucrative five-year contract with Netflix, signed after they stepped back from their senior Royal duties just before the pandemic hit.
‘With Love, Meghan’ airs on Netflix on March 4.
