Laura McEwan, 36, has been removed from the teaching register for two years after she struck up a sexual relationship with a former pupil who later stabbed an older man
A Scottish teacher has been struck off after seducing a former student who later stabbed an older man in a fit of jealousy.
Laura McEwan, 36, entered into a sexual relationship with an ex-student after he left Castlemilk High School in 2019 when he was aged 17, the Daily Record reports. The pair are believed to have met while McEwan was working as a PE teacher at the school. The Daily Star has made the decision not to name the ex-pupil.
McEwan was present when her former student attacked William Taube at a flat party in Shettleston, Glasgow, in August 2020. The ex-student, now 23, and his accomplice launched a brutal assault that resulted in unarmed Taube being stabbed eight times.
A source told the Record the former pupil stabbed Taube in a rage after becoming upset upon seeing McEwan with the older man. After the incident, which left the victim fighting for his life, McEwan fled the scene with her ex-student and drove him to her home.
The source revealed: “Her relationship with the former pupil was found out after she attended a house party in Shettleston. When he found out she was going, he attended and brought a knife.
“When he saw her there with an older man, he got jealous and stabbed him. She then fled the scene and drove them both to her house, where they were found together by police.
“The pair met at Castlemilk High when he was a pupil. Her conduct is predatory and appalling.”
The ex-student admitted attempting to murder Mr Taube at the High Court in Glasgow in March 2021 but now McEwan, who was previously employed as faculty head at Drumchapel High School, has attended a hearing at the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
She admitted several allegations against her and was removed from the teaching register for two years. McEwan admitted driving the ex-pupil home from school in her car at some point in 2019.
She also admitted drinking alcohol with former S6 pupils in April 2019 and allowing a photo of her doing so to be taken, which later went viral on Facebook. At the time of the murder bid, McEwan also admitted attempting to persuade a witness to not cooperate with police by telling them not to disclose her name or address to officers.
McEwan signed an order to remove herself from the profession and will be able to apply for re-registration in 2027.
