Fred Stolle dies at 86 as tributes paid to Wimbledon and tennis commentator icon

Former Wimbledon finalist and legendary tennis commentator Fred Stolle has died aged 86.

The two-time Grand Slam winning Aussie won the French Open in 1965 and the US Open in 1966, as well as reaching three consecutive Wimbledon finals between 1963 and 1965.

Stolle is widely considered one of the all-time greats of the sport, with him also winning 10 Grand Slam men’s double titles, including two at All England Club in 1962 and 1964.

Tributes were paid to Stolle from Tennis Australia, who described him as a “great” player and character. CEO Craig Tiley said: “When we speak about Australia’s golden era and the progression from amateur to professionalism, Stolle’s name is right up there with the best.

“A star member of Australia’s Davis Cup team, Fred made significant contributions to the sport following his decorated career, as a coach and astute commentator.

“His legacy is one of excellence, dedication, and a profound love for tennis. His impact on the sport will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege to witness his contributions. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Fred’s family and friends during this sad time.”

Australian tennis legend Rod Laver also took to social media to pay his tribute, writing: “As I wrote in my book on the Golden Era of Aussie tennis, Fred Stolle was too nice a guy to hold a grudge.

“He won many Grand Slams and was in the finals of many more. It took the best to beat the best. We never tired of reliving the past as we travelled the world looking into the future with an enduring love of the sport. You will be missed, Fiery, RIP.”

His friends and ex-colleagues also took to X to pay tribute, with Paul McNamee writing: “Fiery Fred Stolle is no longer with us. What a player, what a commentator, what a bloke.
