Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has backed the club’s decision to leave Old Trafford.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe announced earlier this week that United plan to build a new £2bn stadium, while moving on from the ground they have called home since 1910.
Scholes admitted it will be sad to leave the iconic Old Trafford behind, but believes the time is right to move on.
‘I was quite excited (by the announcement),’ Scholes told TNT Sports.
‘This stadium holds many memories for me and I have played in some of the greatest stadiums ever. This place has that history but it is about time United moved on, as much as it will be sad to say goodbye.’
World-renowned architect Norman Foster is set to front the project, and United have made some bold statements this week about regenerating south Manchester alongside building their new super stadium.

Paul Scholes is excited by the move, but warned that ‘talk is cheap’ and questioned whether the club can deliver on their promises
Scholes is impressed by the stadium designs, but it has not been confirmed exactly how United will raise funds to pay for it.
He praised Ratcliffe for speaking openly about his grand plans, but is a little concerned that it may be difficult for the part-owner to deliver on his word.
Speaking about the new stadium, Scholes added: ‘I like the look of it, it looks fantastic, if it is deliverable.
‘Whether that money can be raised, I don’t know. It has been an exciting week in some ways, the owner communicating with the fans, which hasn’t happened for some time now.
‘Things need to be proven but there are some exciting things, the team is the most exciting thing.
‘They think 3-5 years but they are all words, talk is cheap. When that happens I will be as excited as everyone else. It is OK coming out and saying these things but I hope they come true.’
