Spanish-owned banking chain Santander will shut 95 branches this year, with the majority of the job losses linked to branch closures, while approximately 12% are from a reduction in working hours
Banking behemoth Santander has announced that the first wave of 95 branch closures will commence in June. In addition, it plans to reduce operating hours at 36 locations and transform 18 branches into counter-free sites.
This extensive revamp will affect over a third of its robust 444-branch network. Post-overhaul, the Spanish-owned Santander will be left with a total of 349 branches, comprising 290 full-service outlets and five “work cafes”.
The bank has warned that these changes could potentially jeopardise around 750 jobs – representing more than 4% of its 18,000-strong UK workforce – subject to approval following discussions with unions.
The majority of the job losses are linked to the branch closures, while approximately 12% are due to the proposed reduction in working hours.
Santander attributes this drastic overhaul to the growing trend of customers opting for online banking. The company reports a 63% surge in digital transactions since 2019, contrasted by a 61% decline in branch transactions.
The closure plan includes shutting down 71 Santander branches in England, 10 in Scotland, seven in Wales, and seven in Northern Ireland, impacting every region of England.
From June 30, the majority of Santander’s reduced-hours branches will be open just three days a week, either Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 3pm, or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 3pm and Saturdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
Eighteen sites will become counter-free branches from June 16, but they will also be manned by staff to offer face-to-face support, with an average of eight workers in these branches. The group said it will recruit 95 new community bankers in the locations where it is shutting branches and hopes to redeploy some of the affected workers into these jobs.
The new community bankers will visit local communities on a weekly basis, based in centres such as libraries and community halls.
