Toddler is discovered wandering the streets alone sporting only a nappy and holding a small ball

A toddler has been found wandering the streets alone while wearing just a nappy and holding a small ball.

The young boy was found by a member of the public in Newport just before 7am on Thursday.

They called the police, who attended the scene on Temple Street in the Pill Mill area.

Gwent Police said in an initial statement that they had taken the youngster into their care, while speaking with his parents to establish what happened.

The force has since confirmed they have identified no criminal offences and the child has been returned to his parents’ care.

The toddler is believed to be around two or three-years-old.

Reports on social media claimed he was found wearing only nappies and holding a small ball, South Wales Argus reports.

It was also claimed he is non-verbal, the news outlet added.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: ‘We received a report of a young boy being found by a member of the public in Newport at around 6.55am on Thursday 20 March.

‘The child is currently safe with our officers while they speak with his parents to establish the circumstances.’

A similar incident took place last year in Midlothian, Scotland, when a toddler was found walking alone.

She was spotted on to Burnbrae Road, in Bonnyrigg, by a passing couple at around 12.15pm on August 28.

The child was soon reunited with her parents after officers arrived at the scene.
