Donald Trump has said he is ready to have America join the British Commonwealth. The President agreed that it would be a “good” thing if King Charles asked the USA to become an “associate member”.

He was responding to the suggestion that His Royal Highness would invite America to join the group, which is headed by the monarch. The Donald wrote on his Truth Social account: “I love King Charles. Sounds good to me!”

There have been reports that the King could ask the United States to join the 56-member organisation when Trump makes his state visit to Britain. The US is one of a handful of former British colonies to so far shun membership.

But joining could help ease tensions with Commonwealth founder member Canada, of which the King is head of state. It would also be seen as strengthening the USA’s ties to the United Kingdom.

Although America declared independence from Britain in 1776, this would be no impediment to it becoming the 57th member.

The last four to join – Mozambique, Rwanda, Togo and Gabon – have no links with the Empire at all.

It is the second time the move has been discussed with The Donald.

The proposal was previously made by the Royal Commonwealth Society, with the late Queen’s backing, in Trump’s first term as President, but did not come to fruition.

Reform leader Nigel Farage, a pal of the President, hand-delivered a letter from the RCS at the time.

He said: “The idea of joining the English speaking peoples of the world appeals to Trump, he likes the royal family, he is a Churchill fan and the Americans have just about forgiven us for George II and 1812 [when British troops set fire to the White House].

“I think it would be great if America joined the Commonwealth and hosted the Commonwealth Games. It might become a more powerful organisation, which is important because China has been targeting Commonwealth countries.

“Barbados removed the Queen as head of state without a referendum despite their constitution under Chinese pressure.

“The Solomon Islands has been targeted and now has a Chinese naval base.

“There is a Chinese geopolitical strategy to attack the Commonwealth to weaken Britain’s soft power and if America was to join it would be a very good thing.”
