Thomas Tuchel cuts England stars from squad and makes Morgan Gibbs-White U-turn

Thomas Tuchel cuts England stars from squad and makes Morgan Gibbs-White U-turn

Thomas Tuchel has recalled Morgan Gibbs-White for England’s clash with Latvia.

The Nottingham Forest star was omitted from the Three Lions’ initial 26-man squad, but he was soon back in the team after an injury led Cole Palmer to withdraw. However, he was again dropped for Friday’s clash with Albania.

Gibbs-White has now been included in England’s 23-man squad for their Monday night clash. Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah has also been drafted in for the match, with Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Aaron Ramsdale all absent.

Tuchel has been impressed with the striker despite his initial snub. The England boss said: “It’s very likely that he will be in the squad. Morgan is an amazing character, I have to say that.

“I’m happy that he’s with us, he deserves a lot of praise, first of all the first disappointment when he was not in the squad, he handled it very well because when he got the second call, straight away he was excited, he didn’t take it personally.

“I can see why he’s a winner, I see that, he won with the youth teams, titles, he’s a fantastic team player and he can handle disappointment very well.

“When we trained after the match at Wembley he was one of the outstanding players again even though he was not in the squad and that’s amazing. That’s how we expect it to be.”

Tuchel added: “We have to get the process right to find the best group.

“If that means we leave very good and talented players out of the squad this can happen.

“In the next 16 months it is important we find the right team and not the most talented 26 players.

“We need to get the team right. We need to get the team spirit right because it’s one thing to play qualifiers, it’s another thing to play tournament football.”
