Manchester United have updated Patrick Dorgu’s name on their official website and team sheets following a request from the Denmark international’s family.

The left-back, who joined United in January as Ruben Amorim’s first signing, has already made an impression, featuring in the starting line-up six times and delivering solid performances.

The 20-year-old was signed for around £30million from Serie A club Lecce, where he had emerged as one of the season’s standout talents. United were quick to secure his services to address their issues at left-back.

However, while most fans know him as Dorgu, the player has requested that United include his middle name, Chinazaekpere, whenever he is mentioned in club media and on match days.

Dorgu’s family hails from Nigeria, and Chinazaekpere roughly translates to “God answers prayers”. They wanted this name included as a mark of respect for his heritage and faith.

A United article offered more insight into Dorgu’s family and background while officially introducing his full name for the first time. It stated: “Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu has been a Manchester United player for only a matter of weeks but the early signs have been encouraging.”

“One of four children, Patrick – who has a Christian middle name – is surrounded by a family who is religious but also embedded in sport, with two brothers who are footballers and a sister who plays handball.

“Admittedly a Chelsea fan as a boy whose childhood idol was Eden Hazard, Patrick grew up in the Husum neighbourhood of Copenhagen to Nigerian parents who have always supported and encouraged their children’s education.”

Dorgu opened up about his decision to join the Red Devils, crediting manager Amorim for convincing him that United was the right place for his career. “I obviously saw Ruben in Sporting and could already see the ideas he had,” shared Dorgu earlier this month. “A really attacking system and I would like to get in the box and score goals.

“He (Amorim)’s talking about, obviously, the connection with the other players, the midfielders, the 10s, it’s the connections, a lot of deep runs and movement. It was not nice to get the red card but it is football and I just need to learn from this and improve my game. I am settling in Manchester, the training is good.”
