Trent Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season and has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent months
Michael Owen has thrown open the doors for a heart-to-heart with Trent Alexander-Arnold over a possible switch to Real Madrid.
The ex-Liverpool forward famously traded Anfield for the Santiago Bernabeu back in 2004.
Owen’s Spanish adventure lasted just a season, where he banged in 16 goals across 46 matches. The now 45-year-old moved on to Newcastle United in 2005 but later admitted he had pined for a Liverpool comeback – a dream that remained unfulfilled.
Having worn the Real Madrid colours himself and made the big leap from Liverpool amid swirling transfer rumour’s, Owen knows all about the drama of such a headline-grabbing move – something Alexander-Arnold could be facing soon.
The 26-year-old defender is ticking down to the last stretch of his contract at Anfield, putting him in the shop window for a free transfer when summer hits.
Speaking with the Liverpool ECHO in December 2024, Owen dished out: “Would I be open for a chat? Of course, if he reached out for me, yeah. I have lots of people that I speak to. I work in television, I’m interviewing people all the time.
“I’m covering games, I’m in and around places and TV studios. I’m always chatting to people and people ask for advice and things like that. If Trent called me then of course I would,” reports the Liverpool Echo.
Owen believes there’s no black-and-white answer for Alexander-Arnold’s potential move. He went on to say: “There’s no good or bad decision really. The only good or bad decision is the after time, in 10 years.
“That’s the only reason you’ll ever say it is a good or bad decision. Whereas when you live it, it’s that way. I decided that at the time and I can’t change it.
“From Trent’s point of view, he’ll make his decision based on all the facts in front of him, and that will be the right thing for him at this time.
“That’s what he’ll have to live with forever, and I’m sure he’ll be comfortable with that. If other people have this opinion in the future, as I say, these after-timers, then, whatever. Just whatever. It doesn’t matter.”
The Athletic has reported that Real Madrid are on the hustle to seal the deal for Alexander-Arnold. Word on the street is that the Spanish big dogs need to give Liverpool the heads up if they manage to lock down a pre-contract agreement – but no word yet.
Rumour has it that the La Liga titans have had their eyes on the English lad for a solid two years. The Athletic also chucked in that since January, Real have been pulling out all the stops to get Alexander-Arnold on board.
