Bournemouth star Dean Huijsen has had to deny that he smokes weed in a bizarre interview.

The defender spoke on a podcast with influencer Papa Pincus during the international break, and he was asked about his use of marajuana as he always looks ‘relaxed’ on the pitch.

The host asked: “It really seems to me like you are pretty medicated on weed. Do you smoke weed?”

The 19-year-old laughed but then said he had ‘sleepy eyes’.

He said: “Basically, for everyone watching, I have sleepy eyes. I have it from my mum because my mum has sleepy eyes. I’m not high. I’m sorry, I’m not high. We’re not allowed to take weed, it’s doping control. I’m not high. It’s how I was born. I can’t do anything about it.”

Pincus referenced an image of the star with a Premier League man-of-the-match award in which he appeared to have red eyes.

But Huijsen said it was due to an incident on the pitch.

He added: “I got a ball in my eye. Someone shot and it went right in my eye. So I was even worse.”

Some fans have criticised Pincus’ line of questioning, but he insists that Huijsen did not mind.

Pincus said on X: “Just an FYI for those allergic to light-hearted banter. We ran through all the questions beforehand, he loved this one. Sorry we didn’t ask him who has the AUX in the changing room or who’s the worst dressed teammate. He clearly saw the funny side, maybe you should too!”

Huijsen has made 27 appearances since he joined Bournemouth from Juventus last summer. He has also made his debut for the Spanish national team, and he has reportedly garnered interest from Real Madrid.

But he said: “I’m not thinking about that right now. I’m thinking about ending the season well, and I hope I do.

“Then when the time comes, we’ll see. It makes you proud that such a big team is interested in you. I’ll keep working, and being humble.”

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente said: “I think he is great news for Spanish football, for the national team, to see a player that is making his debut and playing with that self confidence, dealing with the pressure with so much spontaneity.

“I think this is great news, and I am thrilled to add a player to what we call our cause, our family. He’s also had a fantastic integration to the demands and responsibilities we have requested from him. I insist he has fantastic personal behaviour, and football-wise, he’s extraordinary.”
