Five people have been injured in a terrifying knife attack in Amsterdam’s town square and one suspect has been arrested, local police have said. Dozens of first responders, ambulances, police and an air ambulance flooded to the scene at Dam Square this just after 3.30pm local time and treated victims.
One suspect has been arrested by the police as the status of the victims is also not known at this time. The capital city’s mayor Mayor Femke Halsema has withdrawn from a council debate due to the incident, according to the local press.
Local police said a motive for the attack remains “unclear”. They said in a statement on X: “In a stabbing incident at the Sint Nicolaasstraat nearby the Dam square five people have been injured. One suspect has been arrested.
“A motive is currently still unclear, but part of our investigation.” Eyewitnesses say at least three people were injured, but authorities have not released any official information.
Trams in the area around Dam Square have been shut down with no service between Amsterdam Centraal and Dam Square as authorities come to terms with the situation.
Footage shared on social media show an air ambulance landing on the historic square as crowds of onlookers gather.
