Harry Redknapp appeared to make an alleged Nazi-style salute after calling Thomas Tuchel a “German spy”.

Redknapp, who has managed in the Premier League with Portsmouth, Tottenham and West Ham, was speaking in front of an audience in London last week when he was asked if England were right to appoint Tuchel.

“I don’t know,” Redknapp said, in a video shared by The Guardian, before he tried to amuse the audience.

“I’ll be honest with you, I think he’s a German spy. I’m telling you. Seriously, he’s been sent over to f*** us up. He has. I’m telling ya, he’s like Lord Haw Haw in the war – ‘We have your best soldiers captured’ and all that.”

Redknapp then appears to try and impersonate Tuchel: “‘Go over and ruin that team”. He then puts on on a German accent, saying “Ja” and lifting his left arm and performing a salute to the amused audience.

In the clip, Redknapp then said: “I’m going, I’ve got to go and see my accountant,” before quipping that he hadn’t been paid for the charity gig.

Tuchel took over the England job following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after England’s loss in the Euro 2024 final to Spain.

The German is England’s third foreign manager, following Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

He landed the job on the back of a CV which boasts the Premier League and Champions League titles with Chelsea, as well as league titles with PSG and Bayern Munich.

The German ambassador to the UK, Miguel Berger, said at the time: “I think it’s a small minority that thinks that and I found it a bit outdated.

“The side has had foreign coaches before, so to have a foreigner is nothing new. It’s a brave decision, but it’s a very clear and a very clever one.”
