Ex-world champ launches BTEC with a twist giving college students boxing ‘buzz’ diploma

Anthony Crolla is keen to help teenagers box clever by mixing education and boxing training.

The former world lightweight champion is launching a BTEC diploma for 16-18 years olds with a twist – you will train under his guidance. The Project Boxing Diploma – delivered in partnership with Central YMCA – will give people the chance to get qualifications while also working in the gym either for fitness or to compete.

Crolla said: “I wish a diploma like this was around when I was about to leave school. I would’ve absolutely jumped at the chance to study and train every day. Obviously a BTEC can lead to a degree if the students want to go down that path, but I really believe it will help set them up for whatever they want to do, be that boxing or otherwise.

“I’ve been around boxing all my life and did alright when I was fighting, so I’d like to think I can pass on a little bit of knowledge. I’m sure the students will also get a buzz out of training with some of the fantastic pro boxers we have in the gym.

“I’m also fortunate that I work in the media as a TV pundit with the major broadcasters. It’s important that the students get to understand how the whole business works.”

Crolla founded Project Boxing with Manchester-based Dominic McGuinness and this is the latest part of their business which also sees them help sportsmen and women in and out of the ring. The diploma covers modules including: media production, marketing, coaching, sports science, nutrition, fitness, and employability skills. While students will train with Crolla at Fox Amateur Boxing Club in Oldham alongside his growing stable of professional fighters.

Karen Ogden, Head of Education, Central YMCA said: “We are incredibly excited to be partnering with Anthony and Project Boxing to support young people in our community. This collaboration is about more than just boxing, it’s about empowering the next generation with the education, knowledge, and experience they need to take the next steps in their careers.”
