Britain will be hotter than the Mediterranean next week as a 500 mile-wide Portuguese plume blows in with 25C temperatures.

The sizzle will spark the first beach stampede of the year as the Easter holidays begin at the weekend. There are set to be highs of 19C on Monday, climbing to 23C by Thursday.

And the week after will see temperatures soar to 25C, which is 12C above average. With sizzling air from Portugal blowing in, even the North is expected to see a balmy 21C.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “The fine weather is set to continue for the second week of April, with 24C or 25C possible in heat blowing north from Spain and Portugal.

“It’s fabulous conditions for the start of British Summer Time, with 23C expected this week.”

Britain is set to be the warmest place in Europe in the coming days and next week is expected to be more roasting here than Monaco, Madrid and Rome.

A Met Office forecaster said: “Temperatures will become generally warm or very warm. The low 20s could be seen, and it will be dry and bright weather for most.

“Through to mid-April has conditions feeling warm, with high pressure bringing a lot of fine and dry weather.” Meanwhile, bookmakers Coral slashed odds on April being the hottest on record from 5/2 to 4/5 odds-on.

Coral spokesman John Hill said: “The odds are melting faster than an ice cream in the warm spring sun.” Earlier this month, the UK recorded its warmest day of the year so far as temperatures topped 21C.

The highest recorded temperature was 21.3C in both Northolt, west London, and Chertsey, Surrey.

Wales also recorded both its hottest day of 2025 so far and its warmest spring equinox as temperatures at Gogerddan reached 20.4C.

It comes as Brits have been urged ‘stay away’ and ‘act now’ as a popular seaside resort town is set to be hit by extreme weather and floods.

Those in Whitby, North Yorkshire, have received a ‘red alert’ flood warning ahead of dangerously high tides rolling in. They should initiate their “flood plans” with businesses also being told to brace themselves for the risky conditions.

The picturesque town, which is popular with holiday-goers, could expect to see the “worst” of the weather-induced floods around the harbour and surrounding areas. It’s predicted that the tides are supposed to be at the highest around 6:45pm, which could later lead to an overflow that will cause flooding.

Floodline issued the warning that told people to “stay away” from the coastal footpaths, roads, beaches and promenades due to the possible impending floods.
