It might just be the surest sign so far of how low Anthony Joshua’s once glittering career has sunk.
Because the former world heavyweight champion is being linked with a fight against Jake Paul. Most people tend to know who Paul is. But for anyone who doesn’t, he’s the YouTuber and social media ‘influencer’ turned boxer, who beat someone close to pensionable age – Mike Tyson – in his last scrap.
In fact, the American loudmouth took to social media to mock Joshua for having little skill and a glass chin. A bout between 35-year-old Joshua and Paul, 28, could earn the Brit up to $50million (£39m).
But Joshua wouldn’t be able to put a price on the damage it would do to what remains of his credibility. Having been knocked out in his last fight, against Daniel Dubois in front of almost 100,000 fans at Wembley, Joshua should be concentrating on what he needs to do to somehow regain the world title a third time.
Not put himself in a ring with Paul, and becoming vulnerable to what would be one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. If Paul won, that is, not Joshua.
Joshua has praised Paul in the past, suggesting that his presence in boxing is good for the sport. But there would be nothing good about Joshua taking him on, because he would have more to lose than gain, which would be nothing.
Apart from a mammoth pay day, of course.
