A homeowner was stunned after getting the keys to his new house and finding a pillow and duvet – in the attic.

And sympathetic social media users were quick to offer helpful advice like: “You’re probably fine. Only an absolute lunatic would be sleeping there.”

The new homeowner, a Reddit user named AnnualMeaning2356 shared a photo of his creepy discovery on the forum.

He wrote: “Just bought this house a couple of days ago. Found this today in the attic eaves…. the attic is converted and you can only access the eaves through that room.

“I’ve already changed the front door locks but feel pretty uneasy. Any ideas? The picture and ‘book’ have been put there by me, but the pillow and duvet were there in that position.

“Feels like an odd place/position to just ‘store’ them. Do I have a squatter possibly? Pretty spooky.”

One user asked if notorious serial killer Fred West was a previous tenant at the house, while others continued the theme of joking that “only an axe-wielding lunatic” would sleep in a loft.

Quoting an iconic episode of Only Fools And Horses, one forum member quipped: “What self respecting axe murderer would go upstairs for 40 winks and leave his chopper in the sideboard?”

Channelling their inner Rodney and Del Boy, another joked: “He might have a spare one,” before another replied: “Oh he’s got a whole collection of ’em now, has he? I suppose he’s got a little Caddy that carries ’em round for him?”

One cheerful user suggested: “At least you’ll be murdered in your sleep. Quite a peaceful way to go.”

Other more helpful suggestions included: “Did the previous owners have children? Or it could have been when the owners argued, and one was relegated to the attic rather than the couch!”

Another user shared that when they were younger, their friend’s dad had a make-shift bed in their attic eaves.

They continued: “He was a policeman so would work long nights. It was the best place to get some sleep; in the dark and away from the noise of a young family. Hopefully this was used for a shift worker too, because anything else is creepy as hell!”
